Born in Istanbul in 1932, Yoel Markus immigrated to Israel at the age of 11 within the framework of "Aliyat Hanoar" and "Youth Migration". He was educated in a religious youth village near Kfar Hasidim. He later participated in the Israeli War of Independence.
At the age of eighteen, she won the writing contest of the magazine "Haolam Haze / This World". Thereupon, with the help of the editor of "This World", he started to write regularly in the journal Herut. In 1953, he joined the editorial staff of "Hador/Nesil", the organ of the Mapai party. Two years later, he started to write on military and political issues in the newspaper "Davar". In 1964, he was sent to France as a correspondent by the newspaper he worked for. Between 1965 and 1968, he was the Western European correspondent of the newspaper "Haaretz". He returned to Israel; He later worked as the US correspondent for the same newspaper between 1977-80. He continued his journalism life in “Haaretz” and became a part of the administration.
Three weeks before the First Lebanon War, he published an article called "Bloody Poker" and warned of the coming war. One of Markus' important 'skipping' news was that in 1983, the late Prime Minister Begin had retired to his home and was leaving political life. Another important “override” was the announcement in 2004 by the late Prime Minister Sharon that he would decide to evacuate some residential areas in Gaza and the West Bank.
He was awarded the "Mifal Hayim"/"Life Award" at a "Journalism Seminar" held in Eilat in 2007.
He ended his articles in the Haaretz newspaper in 2016.
In 2017, he was honored with the “Sokolov Life Award”, one of the most prestigious awards in the country. The statement of the award committee on this issue was also very proud. Markus received this award for being one of the greatest publishers and journalists ever to write in the Hebrew language. Especially in Haaretz newspaper, openly defending his ideas, writing impressive, independent and courageous articles while having open access to politicians and administrators who are in a decision-making position; meanwhile, his superiority was expressed as someone who can keep the distance necessary for a journalist.
